Turndown Service
Turndown service is the second housekeeping visit of the day, made in the evening while a guest is out, that prepares the room for sleep. The bed is turned back, curtains drawn, lights dimmed, and a small amenity is often left behind. It is a hallmark of luxury properties.
Turndown is timed around dinner, which is one reason housekeeping and the restaurant end up coordinating on it: the room gets serviced while the guest is at the table. What gets left behind varies by property, from a chocolate and tomorrow’s forecast to a bottle of water and slippers.
It is also one of the few nightly moments a hotel can personalise without asking the guest anything twice. Extra pillows, a firm preference for no turndown at all, a note that the guest works late: recorded once, those should follow the guest to every future stay rather than being rediscovered by whoever is on the floor.
