Loyalist × Square

Connecting Square puts what a guest actually spends onto their profile. Closed orders arrive with the items rung in, and where a Square customer record is attached to the payment, the order reaches that guest directly. A restaurant can then see lifetime spend per person and market on buying history.

How it works

A point-of-sale system knows what every table spent and nothing about who was sitting there. Square sends its closed orders to Loyalist, and Loyalist attaches each one to a guest, which is the step that turns yesterday’s takings into one person’s history. Orders arrive with the total, the items rung in, and the table where Square records one. Where a payment carries a Square customer record, the contact details on it come across too, so that order reaches the right guest without anything else being needed. Dine-in orders that carry no customer are matched to the booking that held the table, and from there the spend belongs to a person.

Key benefits

  • All Square order and item details are brought into Loyalist. The order total, the items rung in, the table where Square records one, and the payment behind it. Where a Square customer record is attached to the payment, that guest’s contact details come across with the order.
  • Every order a guest has paid adds up on one profile. Orders that arrive without a customer are matched to the booking that held the table, so spend stops being a daily total and accumulates per person. A modest twice-a-month regular becomes visible next to a once-a-year big spender.
  • Campaigns and journeys can be built on what guests actually buy. Order size and the items behind it define the group: the guests whose orders run large, the ones buying the same thing every time, the ones who stopped coming after the summer. A campaign then reaches those people instead of the whole list.
  • The entire order history is imported at the start. Earlier orders arrive from the Square account instead of starting the day the connection is made, so money a restaurant has already taken is on the profile the first time anyone opens it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Square bring guest contact details with the order?

Sometimes, and it depends on the payment. Where Square has a customer record attached to the payment, the contact details on it arrive with the order and it reaches that guest directly. An order with no customer attached carries no identity, which is true of every point-of-sale system, and reaches a guest through the reservation match instead.

Does Loyalist see individual items or only the order total?

Both. The items rung in arrive along with the total, which is what makes it possible to tag a guest on what they order rather than only on what they spend. Modifier options are not part of what Square passes through, so preferences expressed as a modification are not visible here.

What happens to my Square history?

All of it. Earlier orders load once the connection is made, and each is folded into the guest records the guestbook already holds instead of sitting in a Square list of its own. A regular’s total is therefore correct on the first day rather than after a year of accumulating.
